Anti-wrinkle injections are highly effective for treating naturally formed perioral lines, but they have a secondary, equally important effect. Botox works by blocking signals to the muscles that cause contraction, and over time those muscles weaken, reducing the strength of the contractions which can cause perioral lines in the first place if those contractions occur naturally. If you have perioral lines due to smoking, the contractions will continue and the treatment will be less effective. For this and other reasons, we advise you to quit smoking today or to get help to quit.   • Anti-wrinkle injections inhibit the signals which cause muscles to contract, simultaneously plumping the skin while giving it a break from the repeated movements that cause wrinkles.

If you smoke, we advise quitting before getting anti-wrinkle treatment, as continued contraction due to smoking will undermine the effectiveness of the injections.

  • Anti-wrinkle injections can be administered in about 30 minutes, though if it’s your first visit, extra time will be needed to consult with you, helping us understand your desired outcome.

  • Results typically last for 3–4 months. However, if the treatment is repeated over time, your muscles will be ‘retrained’ by the weakening effect of Botox, reducing the strength of the contractions which cause wrinkles in the first place. As this occurs, the length between treatments can extend, and twice yearly injections can be enough to maintain the results.
